Album Review:
In the past, Seether has always struck me as a band struggling to find its own identity and sound. But after giving Finding Beauty in Negative Spaces a few spins, I've realized that this post-grunge outfit is really using their influences to craft an ever-changing body of work.
I read some complaints that Shaun Morgan is trying to emulate Chad Kroeger on this album. Even if he was making an effort to sound like Kroeger, I don't understand why that would be a problem. I don't think it's the reality of the situation. I hear a vocalist trying new things to gain different sounds from his instrument.
Lyrically, the songs are tormented and bitter. One can only speculate about the real meanings, as Morgan seldom discusses it (as it should be). But, you can still imagine, while reading the words, that some insight into the events of the past few years is being revealed.
What really matters is that this is a musically sound album. A couple songs dive a little too deep into the commercial pond for my taste, but the album as a whole is redeemed with great tracks like the epic "No Jesus Christ." The band has proven that they are more versatile songsmith's than I previously thought.
