A Brand New Kind of Adaptation
An Interview with Justin McCoy of Another Big Machine
Interview Date: March 5, 2008
Another Big Machine is an up and coming band that is poised to cause a stir once the masses get a whiff of their major label debut to be released on June 24th. The fuse is lit, and this band is ready to explode. Vocalist Justin McCoy took some time to speak with me about how they got where they are, and of things to come for Another Big Machine.
Type 3 Media: Tell me a little bit about what's going on with Another Big Machine.
Justin McCoy: We've jammed around Baton Rouge for a couple years now. We just came together and started writing original music. Started touring and made some independent records in the past that we released, pushed, and toured. Now, as far as what Another Big Machine is doing, we just got done recording a record in Nashville, and we're getting ready to push the first single. I hope we do a lot of touring. Right now we're back to this point of basically a lot of touring, a lot of hard work, a lot of playing shows, pushing our MySpace page a lot, networking, meeting with people, and talking with people. Everything seems to be going really well at this point.
T3M: Is this the first major release that you've had a chance to work on?
JM: It is.
T3M: What are your thoughts on the recording process?
JM: The big surprise for me during this recording process was working with Charlie Anderson, the guy who produced the record. He's actually been the bass player for Reba McEntire for the past fifteen years. Going into that, and us being a rock band, I wasn't really skeptical about it at first. We were kind of excited and wondering what was going to happen once we got in there. I think he did an awesome job. He was really humble and kind, and let us be ourselves. I thought that was just awesome. That was one of the surprising things man, is that he allowed us to just be ourselves on the record. It was a lot fun.
T3M: Finding the right producer is key.
JM: Exactly man.
T3M: Is the album mixed, mastered and ready for release?
JM: The album is mastered and mixed. It's ready to roll and comes out on June 24th.
T3M: What's going to be the first single?
JM: Right now we're pushing for a song called "Brand New Kind Of Love." It's not on our MySpace page yet, but I'm pretty sure within the next couple weeks it'll be up there. People can go to MySpace and check out "Brand New Kind Of Love."
T3M: In your own words how would you describe your band's sound?
JM: We're definitely a rock band. As far as the music goes, I would just describe it as being really really true and uplifting music. We like to write about things that people can relate to, not basically like a story or something that you'd make the listener feel like the song is talking about something that they have no idea what's going on. We like to write for people to be able to relate to the song and the music.
T3M: What kind of music did you get into growing up?
JM: When I was younger, just old country like George Jones, Johnny Cash, and people like that. Into my early teenage years I started listening to a lot of music that I've never heard before. That was in the early 90's so I got big into music like Nirvana, Third Eye Blind, Bush, and Gin Blossoms. That's basically what I grew up on. To this day, it's always been my favorite. I also grew up listening to my grandfather's old records, like Boston, Creedance Clearwater Revival, Journey, and those types of bands. I really like the seventies music man, like the Beatles. All that's good stuff.
T3M: Do you have any tour plans in the works?
JM: As of right now man, I'm not sure. I'm hoping that we'll be out on the road very soon promoting the record. I know we have a few shows coming up, but as far as a tour, not right now.
