It's a Long Way Through the Tunnel

An Interview with Tunnels to Holland

Interview Date: October, 2007

During my recent road trip following HURT's tour, I had the prviledge of hanging out and working with a great band from New Jersey, Tunnels to Holland. They also allowed me to ask them a few questions while on (and off) the road. Their character and sense of humor is as infectious as their music.

Tunnels to Holland is: Vincent Mascolo, Dan Blumig, Bryan Flaherty, Anthony Mascolo, and Matthew McCort

T3M: How did you become connected to make music?

Dan: The Arthur Street U-turn, north-bound Route 18, East Brunswick, New Jersey. I had green hair and Bryan thought he cut me off.

Matt: I personally became involved when Vincent, who I have known for over eight years, told me he needed a guitar player and that I should come by and see what his band Tunnels to Holland is all about.

T3M: What are your musical influences?

Matt: I have pretty wide ranging musical influences including, but obviously not limited to, Led Zeppelin, The Allman Brothers Band, John Frusciante, the Red Hot Chili Peppers, Warren Haynes, Eric Clapton...

Bryan: Kajagoogoo and REO Speedwagon

T3M: What music are you currently listening to?

Matt: Currently, Herbie Hancock, Thrust; Interpol, Our Love to Admire; Ryan Adams (Any Album); The Allman Brothers, Live at the Fillmore East; The Beatles, Rubber Soul.

T3M: Do you have a favorite song?

Dan: Currently, I've been hooked on Springsteen's "Johnny 99" from the Nebraska album, or Neil Young's "Cowgirl in the Sand" from Everybody Knows This is Nowhere. Also, Tom Waits' "16 Shells from a Thirty-Ought-Six". Man, that groove!

T3M: What kind of recording environment do you work in?

Dan: Two part. Old Bridge to Barnegat. Then off to see our Boys at Music Club Studios to Master. Music Club Studios can be found on our MySpace top friends.

T3M: What was the hardest song to write and why?

Dan: I would have to say the alphabet song, even though we didn't write it.

T3M: What is your best experience as a band?

Matt: Opening for HURT in Indianapolis on February 12, 2007.

T3M: What do you think of the current music scene today?

Dan: New York City, IS NEW YORK CITY. Things are different from town to town.

T3M: What separates your band from all the other bands out there?

Bryan: We're not nearly as pretty and were much fatter.

T3M: What is the hardest thing about being in a band for this genre?

Matt: There are so many other great bands.

Bryan: Nobody seems to care about this genre anymore.

T3M: What is most important to you in your band?

Matt: The musical respect given one another. Everyone is always responsive to any input from any member of the band. All ideas are considered or at least tried. The communication is pretty good between us... as good as can be expected from five guys.

T3M: What is your live show like?

Bryan: Gutterly infectious, carnivorously chaotic.

T3M: How are people currently reacting to your music?

Bryan: There has been a lot ass shaking and genital gyration going on.

T3M: Why do you wear headphones while you play the drums?

Vincent: He's listening to something totally different... like Led Zeppelin.

Anthony: The headphones block out a lot of sound. It's like just wearing ear plugs. Then I have the click track on. With regular headphones I used to have to crank it. That would make you deaf on its own.

T3M: How did you come up with the name "Tunnels to Holland"?

Vincent: You don't like it? (laughs)

T3M: I guess you're stuck with it now.

Vincent: It's a pretty simple explanation. We're always commuting back and forth from Jersey through the Holland Tunnel. I got dyslexic while driving through, and while saying it, I just reversed it. That's how it came about. Mystery revealed.

T3M: Interesting.

Vincent: We're writing a Tunnels to Holland book and the first two chapters will be about how we came up with that name. (laughs)

T3M: For the record.

Vincent: You were recording that? You had that hidden, you sneaky bastards!

T3M: Hey, I'm media.

Vincent: I thought you were just the photographer!

T3M: Where do you hope to be in five years with your band?

Bryan: Far away from were we are now.

T3M: Do you have any band goals?

Bryan: Retirement.
