Deftones

with Dir en grey, and The Fall of Troy

June 6, 2007

Providence, RI

The Fall of Troy opened the show to a packed house at Lupo’s Heartbreak Hotel in Providence, RI. This was the best crowd I’ve seen at this venue in a while. Their performance was terrific and did nothing but wet the eager crowd’s appetite for more great music.

Dir en grey, the Japanese quintet, was incredible. Their performance exceeded all expectations. The lighting set the mood for the entire set. First all red, then all blue lighting shrouded the band as they poured out their souls on stage. There were many Dir en grey fans in the crowd.

The dark lighting was great for the show, but made photography very difficult. The band looked great, so I was eager to work hard to ensure I had the best possible photos. It wasn’t easy, but I think I got some good shots.

The Deftones had a great looking set. The stage backdrop was covered with small lights (I think LEDs) that were set up to display images and video during the performance. The band also sounded great. They are touring in support of their latest release, Saturday Night Wrist. 10 years after their 1st major release, the Deftones are still a force to be reckoned with on stage.

At the end of the night, I ventured onto the streets of Providence to take some photos of the city, and ended up talking to one of the guy’s who works at the venue. He asked me if I “got any good shots”. “Sure did” I replied. We shared some "war" stories about the venue... a good conversation... a great way to end the night. I can’t wait until next time.
